The Northern Fowl Mite (NFM) (Ornithonyssus sylviarum) is a relatively common ectoparasite of chickens. They are very small mites, ranging in size from 0.6-1 mm (0.02-0.04 in). NFM permanently live their entire lives on their host, spending most of their time on the feathers, traveling to the skin surface to feed on blood.

Ornithonyssus sylvarium is the northern fowl mite and has a wide host range, so physical examination of these birds should be performed. Since the host range is extensive, free-living passerine may disseminate this parasite in aviary collections. 55,61 Mites may live for some time away from live birds, so control of mites needs to include disinfection of the housing, which may be difficult

2021-03-08 The mite Ornithonyssus bursa (Berlese) (Mesostigmata: Macronyssidae) is considered a poultry pest causing important infestations in chickens and it is considered a potential vector of arbovirus. Despite being considered a common parasite in wild birds, there is scarce published information about its potential hosts and effects on them. Ornithonyssus bacoti bacoti is a hematophagous parasite commonly referred to as the tropical rat mite.[1] They feed only on blood and serum from many hosts.[2][3] They can be found and cause disease on rats and wild rodents most commonly, but also small mammals and humans when other hosts are scarce.[4][5] Outbreaks tend to occur in older, less maintained buildings. The mite however can travel 2016-11-01 The tropical fowl mite, Ornithonyssus bursa, is distributed throughout the warmer regions of the world and has been reported in Hawaii, Texas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, and New York.

The mites were identified as the northern fowl mite Ornithonyssus sylviarum (Mesostigmata: Macronyssidae). This was supported by sequence analysis of a 642-bp region in the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene (COI) in mites collected from five flocks, which showed 97-99% sequence similarity to O. sylviarum by blast analysis. Ornithonyssus spp. are mesostigmatid mites of the family Macronyssidae. The two Ornithonyssus species reported to infect hamsters are Ornithonyssus bacoti, the tropical rat mite or red mite, and Ornithonyssus sylviarum, the northern fowl mite.

The northern fowl mite, Ornithonyssus sylviarum (Canestrini & Fanzago, 1877), is found on several continents and has been a major pest of poultry in the United States for nearly a century. Lack of earlier USA reports in the United States suggests an introduction or change to pest status in domestic poultry systems occurred in the early 1900s.
