This book tells the story of two of the most important figures in the history of chemistry. Carl Wilhelm Scheele (1742-1786) was the first to prepare oxygen and realise that air is a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen; he also discovered many important organic and inorganic substances. Bergman was the first chemist to use the A, B, C, etc., system of notation for chemical species Torbern Olof Bergman, (born March 20, 1735, Katrineberg, Swed.—died July 8, 1784, Medevi), Swedish chemist and naturalist who introduced many improvements in chemical analysis and made important advances in the theory of crystal structure. Bergman was appointed associate professor of mathematics at the University of Uppsala in 1761, and six years later he became professor of chemistry there. When Torbern Bergman died two hun- dred years ago, aged forty-nine, he was regarded as one of Europe's leading chemists and his works were read in several languages far beyond his native Sweden. He had, however, acquired this reputation in only fifteen years and had done research in several other branches of science before publishing his first chemical paper [1]. Carl Wilhelm Scheele (1742-1786) was the first to prepare oxygen and realise that air is a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen; he also discovered many important organic and inorganic substances. His fellow chemist and good friend, Torbern Bergman (1735-1784), was one of the pioneers in analytical and physical chemistry. Torbern Olaf (Olof) Bergman (KVO) (20 March 1735 – 8 July 1784) was a Swedish chemist and mineralogist noted for his 1775 Dissertation on Elective Attractions, containing the largest chemical affinity tables ever published.
